Report shows majority of farmers work outside of home

They work hard in the field, and apparently off the field as well. A report from the University of Missouri Extention Office notes that on average, 82 percent of farm household income comes from outside the home.

Alan Spell, Assistant Extention Professor, says some of the major reasons we see off-farm employment is for a stable source of income to support farm operations, also for job benefits such as health insurance and retirement plans.

We also see off-farm income beneficial to younger farmers, who often have higher debt loads as they grow their farm operations.
