Aug. 10, 2022MARYVILLE, Mo.
This week officially marked the return of high school fall sports practices as student-athletes across Missouri began their prep for the upcoming seasons. For Maryville football, it is a team coming off a district title in 2021 and brings in high expectations once again this year with an experienced group.
Spoofhound head coach Matt Webb said offseason workouts were a success, and he was excited to be back at it in earnest with his team on Monday.
"Coaches talk about (the first practice) being like Christmas day. We put in all of the work in the offseason, and this is why you coach. You do the offseason to get to these days. It's very rewarding to get out and do what you love."
Maryville is coming off a 7-5 season that included a 5-1 mark in Midland Empire Conference play.
This year's team, led by eight seniors, brings back high expectations with the ultimate goal being the program's first state title since 2017. Webb believes that the work ethic and chemistry built by the team leaders has this group heading in the right direction.
"In any organization, for you to be successful at your goals, you have to have the right people on the bus," Webb said. "A lot of times that means maybe the wrong people aren't on the bus. That's OK to talk about as a team. Over the summer and through camps and things I really started getting the feeling like we had the right nucleus of people, and that starts with our senior class."
Maryville will get the chance to make a statement during the first week of the season with a matchup against Blair Oaks on August 26 in Warrensburg, MO. That game will be broadcast on KXCV 90.5 with pregame at 6:30pm followed by the opening kick at 7pm.
