LINCOLN, Neb. - It's been rumored for months and now it's become fact. During a press conference Thursday morning, newly sworn-in Neb. Gov. Jim Pillen appointed former Neb. Gov. Pete Ricketts to fill the vacancy left by former Sen. Ben Sasse.

Sasse stepped down to become the next President of the University of Florida. There's been rumblings since the Nov. election that Gov. Pillen would appoint former Gov. Ricketts to the spot.

Both men say there were no backroom dealings or plans during the selection process. Ricketts will serve the role until Jan. 2025.

Ricketts also would have to run in a special election in 2024 to fill the remainder of Sasse's term, according to Nebraska state law. Ricketts could also then run for re-election in 2026. Ricketts says he's committed to running in both of those elections.
