WASHINGTON - A U.S. Senator from Missouri plans to take on one of the largest social media companies in the world. Republican Sen. Josh Hawley introduced a bill this week that would ban TikTok in the U.S.
Several lawmakers in D.C. have expressed their concern over the data being collected by Tik-Tok's owner, Byte-Dance, which is based in Beijing.
“[TikTok] is China’s backdoor into Americans’ lives,” Hawley said. “It threatens our children’s privacy as well as their mental health. Last month Congress banned it on all government devices.”
Over a dozen states have also attempted to ban the app from government devices, including one in our area.
Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly signed an executive before 2023 that banned the app from devices used in the executive branch, executive branch agencies, boards and commissions employees and prohibited access on the state network.
