DES MOINES, Iowa - Even though it's not Thanksgiving, Iowa hunters should get ready for some turkey. The first spring turkey hunting season of the year begins April 14, lasting through May 10.
Forest Wildlife Biologist for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources Jim Coffey says male or bearded turkeys are legal for harvest and hunters who bag a turkey are required to report the harvest by midnight on the day after it is tagged, before taking it to a locker or taxidermist, or before processing it for consumption.
Coffey adds that hunters should prepare by scouting land, write out a hunting plan, follow safety procedures, and be weather-prepared.
