HIAWATHA, Kan. - One county Sheriff in our listening area says he's received a number of complaints from concerned residents about a phone scam in the area.
Brown County Sheriff John Merchant says someone is calling residents and pretending to be a lineman with the energy company Evergy.
The residents say the person pretending to be a lineman claims the resident is two months behind on their bill. The resident is then given a specific dollar amount and told to pay it back or their power will be shut off in hours.
The resident is then instructed to go to their local Dollar General and purchase a moneypak.
Sheriff Merchantt reminded everyone that these callers are scammers and that if you receive such a call, hang up immediately and notify your local law enforcement.
