MARYVILLE, Mo. - Two leaders at a Maryville non-profit were arrested and charged with stealing nearly half a million dollars.

Former NOC0MO manager Nicki Samson, 59, was arrested last Friday, Feb. 24 and former NOCOMO chief financial officer Margaret Helzer, 63, was arrested Saturday, Feb. 25 in connection with the theft of $483,000.

Both women were charged with two counts of stealing $25,000 or more. A probable cause statement says the NOCOMO board of directors alerted police on Friday, Jan. 20, about the stolen funds.

This comes after Samson suggested to the NOCOMO board last summer that they move employee retirement funds into a new account with a better return on investment.

But Sam and Helzer engineered a scheme to move the funds to an account where they were named as trustees. Authorities were able to recover about $455,324.38 of the money, which still leaves $24,173.40 that hasn't been recovered.

Samson will make her first court appearance on March 21 and Helzer will make her first court appearance on April 4.
