DES MOINES, Iowa - Residents are getting ready for Iowa's boating season as the unofficial beginning of summer approaches this weekend.
Boaters across the state are excited to hit the water after a cool and wet spring, but safety should be their top priority, according to state officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
In 2022, there were 28 reported boating incidents in Iowa, including fatalities and property damage. One of the fatalities involved alcohol.With recent storms, boaters should be cautious of floating debris and higher waters.
Remember to have a designated sober operator, inspect your vessel, and remove drain plugs to prevent invasive species spread.
