Iowa DNR issues reminder for paddlers

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has a reminder for those who have been hitting the lakes and rivers across the Hawkeye State.

Water across Iowa is still hovering in the 60s and the Iowa DNR wants paddlers to wait for warmer water temperatures, like temperatures in the 70s.

When water temperatures do finally warm up, the Iowa DNR adds that you should stay away from strainers and sweepers that can pull a paddler under or pin them underwater.

These are usually found on outside river bends where currents are strongest. Officials also encourage residents to make any needed repairs to your canoe or kayak before heading out.

Also, as always, wear your life jacket at all times when out on the water. For more paddling tips, visit iowadnr.gov/planyourtrip.
