ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Missouri State Highway Patrol had a unique crash and mess to clean up recently.

According to the patrol, a semi carrying 78 heads of cattle crashed on Interstate 29, near Frederick Avenue, after 11 o'clock Sunday night.

The wreck injures some cattle so severely that they had to be euthanized at the scene. Other cattle were rounded up in the median while others broke free and roamed on the highway or in nearby subdivisions.

The highway was shut down in both directions for about five hours while the crash and cattle were taken care of.

According to St. Joseph police, other accidents occurred as drivers came up on the crash, but none of them caused injuries, at least not serious enough injuries to require hospitalization.
