Drought causes MoDOT to change hay rules

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Transportation is providing a special overwidth hauling permit at no cost to assist farmers and ranchers in transporting hay during the ongoing drought.

The permit allows for legal height, length, and weight loads. The usual fees of $96 for a blanket permit and $15 for a single trip are waived for hay haulers until December 1 of this year.

Drivers must apply for the permit for loads exceeding eight feet and six inches in width and plan their routes to avoid work zones and restricted areas.

MoDOT's initiative enables drivers to move hay with certain width allowances, even during holidays and at night. However, precautions should be taken to prevent the spread of fire ants, which have affected the southeastern United States.

Farmers and ranchers suspecting the presence of fire ants in hay shipments should contact their local University of Missouri Extension agent. For more information, contact MoDOT's Motor Carrier Services office at 1-800-877-8499.
