GLENWOOD, Iowa - City officials in Glenwood are considering using tax increment financing to aid in the revitalization of the closed Glenwood Resource Center campus.

The City Council has instructed the City Administrator to begin discussions on designating a section of the campus as an urban renewal area, allowing tax increment financing to be utilized for infrastructure redevelopment.

This recommendation came from officials at the Iowa Economic Development Authority. Council Member Laurie Mead Smithers stated that starting the process soon is essential to secure the designation and financing.

The 380-acre campus is scheduled to close in 2024. Since the closure announcement, the campus has drawn various proposals, including plans for an innovation center, housing options, and a potential veterans housing facility.

The city aims to explore redevelopment opportunities while involving public input and planning for the future of the site.
