DES MOINES, Iowa - Iowa is implementing changes to raccoon hunting and trapping regulations, providing more flexibility for farmers and landowners.
A new bill signed into law by Gov. Kim Reynolds allows landowners or tenants to address raccoon depredation issues on their agricultural property outside city limits.
They can shoot or trap raccoons using cage or dog-proof traps without needing a license or notifying the Iowa Department of Natural Resources beforehand. Additionally, the Iowa DNR has relaxed rules for hunting and trapping raccoons on private land year-round.
Different methods of take are permitted depending on the furharvester season, with valid furharvester licenses required for hunting on private land not owned by the individual. These changes are now in effect.
