DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has secured funds to combat the Emerald Ash Borer and restore Iowa's forests.
Through a grant with the USDA Forest Service and National Association of State Foresters, the DNR received the Emerald Ash Borer Reforestation funds.
The $75,000 worth of funds will be used to purchase and plant trees in counties affected by the Emerald Ash Borer.
The Community Forestry Grant Program is offering reimbursable grants ranging from $500 to $5,000 to state and local governments, schools, volunteer organizations, and service organizations in the 97 impacted counties.
To be eligible, recipients must provide a matching cash contribution to purchase trees and materials from Iowa businesses.
Planting locations include streets, parks, school grounds, courthouses, public buildings, fairgrounds, cemeteries, libraries, and trails. More information, as well as an application, is at iowadnr.gov.
Interested parties must apply by Wednesday, Aug. 23.
