DES MOINES, Iowa - Residents across our listening area are getting ready for a weekend of adventures as lakes and rivers become popular destinations.

With 18,000 miles of navigable waterways in Iowa, the state is reminding paddlers to stay safe on streams and lakes.

Before you embark on your journey, stay informed about real-time hazards such as downed trees and log jams by checking the Iowa Department of Natural Resource's interactive paddling map at iowadnr.gov.

Safety is crucial, so remember these tips: always wear a life jacket, paddle with a group, avoid wading in strong currents, inform someone about your plans, study your route, be aware of river levels and weather forecasts, avoid flood-prone areas, pack essential items like a dry bag with extra clothes, a first-aid kit, and a protected cell phone.

Stay hydrated and protected from the sun as you make lasting memories on the water.
