JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Black vultures pose a growing threat to Missouri livestock producers, prompting the Missouri Department of Agriculture to collaborate with statewide groups to offer assistance.
These aggressive birds target newborn livestock and even sick or birthing cows. Federal law protects black vultures, but permits can be obtained to address the issue.
Producers are encouraged to implement mitigation measures such as penning birthing livestock near human activity, using scare tactics like effigies or loud noises, and employing guard dogs.
The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service offers site visits and technical assistance to develop personalized damage management plans.
In cases of proven livestock loss, producers can seek reimbursement for the animal and necropsy costs through programs like the Livestock Indemnity Program. For more information, visit agriculture.mo.gov.
