MO Ag Department warns about hay scams

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Livestock producers in Missouri are being warned about potential hay scams by the Missouri Department of Agriculture.

With dry conditions and a scarcity of hay, producers have reported instances where they paid for hay upfront via wire transfer but never received the product.

Director of Agriculture Chris Chinn urges caution and recommends verifying the legitimacy of sellers before making purchases. Scammers typically operate through fake social media accounts that appear genuine.

To avoid scams, it is advised to buy from known sellers, verify the reputation of unfamiliar sellers, inspect hay in person, and exercise caution with wire money exchanges.

The Missouri Department of Agriculture and MU Extension Office offer online hay directories to assist producers in finding legitimate sources.
