DES MOINES, Iowa - Swimmer's itch is making its way to Iowa's natural lakes.
According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, this condition is caused by parasitic flatworms that hatch from eggs in bird droppings and infect snails.
When the larvae try to penetrate human skin, they die, causing welts and itching. To prevent swimmer's itch, avoid areas with aquatic plants and reduce time in the water. Dry off quickly after swimming.
Welts and itching can last up to a week and can be treated with antihistamines and calamine lotion. To learn more about swimmer's itch, visit cdc.gov/parasites/swimmersitch.
