Iowa DNR expecting a lot more pheasants

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is predicting a higher than average pheasant population for the upcoming 2023 hunting season.

Research Biologist Todd Bogenshultz says that each summer, the DNR looks at winter and spring weather conditions from both the previous and current year to determine how good breeding conditions are for the pheasant population.

The south side of Iowa has seen reduced snowfall, leading to ideal nesting and brood conditions and setting the Midwest up for a population boom.

Surveys are taken every year from Aug. 1-15, and the definitive results for this year's population prediction will be posted on Sept. 15 at the DNR's website.
