DES MOINES, Iowa - After an excellent 2022 hunting, anticipation is building for Iowa's 2023 pheasant hunting season.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources will kick off its annual roadside pheasant count tomorrow across the state.
Staff will drive 218 routes on gravel roads at dawn, counting hen pheasants and their broods. The preliminary prediction is optimistic, indicating better numbers than last year.
However, the real test comes from the August survey, covering over 6,000 miles of rural roads. The results will be posted online in early September, just in time for the pheasant season, starting on Oct. 28.
