JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - As the heat rages on, the University of Missouri Extension Office is encouraging people to grow something towards the end of the summer.
According to horticulture state specialists, turnips are great to plant before the start of fall. Specialists says the underappreciated root vegetables can be easily grown.
For best results, plant turnip seeds in late summer, and they will mature during the cool fall weather. The root and the leaves are edible, with some people growing turnip varieties specifically for their leaves.
Harvesting after a light frost can make turnips taste sweeter. Turnips can be stored for several months in the refrigerator or a makeshift root cellar.
Both the root and leaves are a nutritious addition to any diet, providing calcium, folic acid, vitamins, and dietary fiber.
