3rd dies after July crash in Iowa

CRESTON, Iowa - We've learned that a third student-athlete from Southwestern Community College in Iowa has passed away due to injuries sustained in a Union County crash back on July 21st.

The accident occurred when a car driven by Madalynn Stewart, 19, failed to stop at a stop sign, leading to a collision with a pickup truck on Highway 34 in Afton.

The SWCC women's basketball program tweeted out on Monday that Stewart had died and is remembering her as an amazing young lady. Halsie Barnes and Ella Leonard, both 19, also lost their lives in the crash.

Another passenger in the vehicle was critically injured and remains hospitalized. The state of Iowa is grappling with road safety this year. So far this year, there have been 207 fatalities on Iowa roads. 23 more than this time last year.
