DES MOINES, Iowa - In Iowa, deer hunters will have a new reporting requirement this year when they hunt a buck. Along with the usual information, hunters will need to report the length of the main antler beam.
Specifically, if it's below or above 14 inches, not the exact length. This data is significant because it helps determine the deer's age.
State deer biologists with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources say that antler beams below 14 inches indicate a younger deer, while those 14 inches and over are older.
The collected data will improve the DNR's population models and provide a better understanding of Iowa's deer herd. Hunters will find a redesigned deer tag with a seven-inch ruler to assist in measurements.
