ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation are beginning urgent repairs on the I-229 bridge in downtown St. Joseph after Mother Nature did some damage.
Extreme heat caused the asphalt to buckle, forcing MoDOT to close the northbound lane for safety reasons.
MoDOT officials say that the bridge's wearing surface became unstable due to the heat, leading to a 100-foot stretch of damage on the bridge.
While there's no set timeline yet, officials say repairs will involve removing the surface, cleaning, and applying new concrete.
The process will take time, and weather permitting, the repairs will be carried out diligently. Motorists are advised to plan alternate routes during road repairs.
