CHICAGO - The world's largest pork process has announced the closure of dozens of hog farms across Missouri. Smithfield Foods plan on closing 35 hog farms and laying off 92 employees in Putnam and Mercer Counties.

According to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice filed with the state, this will happen on Sunday, Oct. 8. The company will be closing 13 sites in Newton, 12 in Lucerne and 10 in Princeton.

This announcement comes at a bad time for producers in the region with the recent announcement by Tyson Foods that they plan on closing four chicken processing plants in Arkansas, Indiana and Missouri.
