Iowa DNR expects great pheasant hunting season

DES MOINES, Iowa - With pheasant season on the horizon, the Iowa Department of Natural resources reports that the 2023 Pheasant survey had a 15% increase in population since 2022.

This is the highest number recorded statewide in 24 years, and the DNR reported that the harvest could be as high 400,000 roosters. The survey included other animals, such as bobwhite quail, gray partridges, and cottontail rabbits.

The partridge population also predicted excellent population, and though the quail did not follow this upward trend from last year, the numbers are still expected to be good if last year was any indication.

Pheasant season begins Saturday, Oct. 28 and you can find the full report as well as season dates at iowadnr.gov/pheasantsurvey.
