MDC encouraging hunters to share the harvest

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Conservation is encouraging deer hunters in the state to share.

The MDC is asking hunters to participate in the Share the Harvest program, which donates surplus venison to feed hungry Missourians. The program is in collaboration with local food banks and food pantries.

It has provided nearly 5 million pounds of venison since 1992. Deer from chronic waste disease Management Zone counties must be tested for CWD before donation, while those outside the zone can be taken to any Share the Harvest processor.

CWD is a deadly disease in deer. As part of its efforts to manage CWD, the MDC offers free voluntary CWD sampling and testing throughout the deer season at select locations.
