JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Conservation is looking for input from turkey hunters regarding potential alterations to spring and fall wild turkey hunting seasons.
Proposed changes include the introduction of all-day spring hunting and reduced harvest limits for the fall seasons.
MDC officials say that significant changes to turkey hunting regulations are overdue, given the shifts in both hunter participation and wild turkey populations over the past two decades.
The decline in turkey populations after a post-restoration boom and a drop in hunting participation has prompted these considerations.
MDC's research indicates that minor increases in male turkey harvests in the spring could be sustainable. Extending spring hunting hours might open up opportunities for new hunters and maintain turkey populations.
Turkey hunters are encouraged to visit mdc.mo.gov for more details on potential regulation changes and to provide feedback before the comment period closes next Friday.
