The Missouri Department of Transportation held a solemn gathering this week. MoDOT personnel and their families gathered Thursday to pay tribute to fallen workers in the past.
According to a MoDOT press release, 139 individuals have lost their lives in the line of duty. Officials from both the district and statewide levels emphasized the significance of roadway safety and discussed measures taken to prevent future tragedies.
MoDOT is emphasizing the role drivers play in avoiding work zone accidents. In 2022, Missouri saw 15 fatalities and 95 serious injuries in work zone crashes.
The department urges drivers to slow down, stay alert, avoid distractions, adhere to speed limits, follow posted signs, and, crucially, wear seat belts, as 71% of work zone fatalities in 2022 were unrestrained.
Safety is a top priority for MoDOT, but officials say it requires cooperation from all who traverse work zones.
