Cost of turkey down since last year

WASHINGTON - Thanksgiving dinner might be a bit easier on the wallet this year as the cost of turkeys is expected to decrease.

Economists from the American Farm Bureau conducted an analysis, revealing an average price drop of $1.27 per pound for an eight-to-16-pound turkey, a 22% reduction compared to August 2023.

The decline is attributed to the recovery of the turkey population and a decrease in avian influenza cases.

The economists noted that the situation with avian influenza is different from a year ago, as migratory birds, a key carrier of the virus, pose a higher risk during spring and fall migrations.

June marked the first month with no flu detections since the outbreak in February 2022. Additionally, egg production increased by 2% year-to-year, reaching 9.38 billion eggs in September 2023.
