DES MOINES, Iowa - Mother Nature is providing some relief this week amid high risks of field and brush fires in Iowa. The Cropland Fire Danger Index from the National Weather Service indicates a widespread high risk across the state.
Parts of the KXCV/KRNW Iowa listening area are at a moderate risk under the Grassland Fire Danger Index.
Fire officials attribute these conditions to prolonged drought and ongoing harvest, creating a "perfect storm" for rapid fire spread. The region has witnessed farm machinery incidents and mutual aid responses to field fires.
Despite the rain, officials are urging against open burns, emphasizing the need for moisture. The National Weather Service forecasts a 60-to-80% chance of showers this week, offering potential relief.
