DES MOINES, Iowa - Iowa's pheasant population is on the rise, setting the stage for an excellent opening weekend of the state's pheasant season.
The annual roadside survey recorded nearly 23 birds per route, a 15% increase over the previous year.
With corn and soybean harvests progressing quickly and cooler weekend temperatures forecasted, conditions are ideal for hunters as pheasant season begins tomorrow.
Hunters can expect to harvest 300,000 to 400,000 roosters this year. Additionally, quail season opens this weekend, and the fall counts indicate a potentially better population than last year.
Iowa's pheasant season will run through January 10, 2024, with a daily bag limit of three roosters.
Hunters are encouraged to explore public hunting lands using the online Hunting Atlas, showcasing over 680,000 acres of accessible areas. For more information, visit iowadnr.gov/hunting.
