Iowa DNR expects a health pheasant hunting season

DES MOINES, Iowa - Iowa's pheasant population is flourishing, with the latest pheasant survey revealing the highest statewide counts since 2015. The statewide average of nearly 23 birds per route marks a 15% surge from 2022.

In a press release, Iowa DNR wildlife research biologists expressed optimism, highlighting the highest population in 24 years in several parts of the state.

The projected harvest could reach 400,000 roosters, with some areas listed as excellent for hunters. Partridge populations in other areas of the state surged, while quail numbers remained steady.

Detailed findings are available at iowadnr.gov/pheasantsurvey. Youth pheasant season Oct. 21-22. Pheasant and quail season begin on Saturday, Oct. 28.

Pheasant season will last through Jan. 10 of next year while quail season will last through Jan. 31 of next year.
