Iowa DNR reminds drivers to watch out for deer

DES MOINES, Iowa - Along with the fall colors on the way, drivers will be seeing more deer on the roads from the middle of October into late November.

With Iowa bucks becoming more active during breeding seasons, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources is reminding drivers that herds of deer will be on the move, and encourage them to stay aware when driving.

Especially during dawn to dusk hours, and in culverts where ditches and treelines create a cover that deer could appear suddenly from.

The way to get the upper hand before these sorts of accidents happen, is for drivers to slow down, increase the follow distance between cars, and watch both sides of the road by sweeping your eyes from ditch to ditch.

In the case of a deer on the road, drivers are encouraged not to veer off road, as leaving the lane can cause collisions with other drivers, road obstacles or trees that may prove more damaging than a deer strike.
