CHILLICOTHE, Mo. - The Livingston County Sheriff's Office is sounding the alarm on the rise of fake identifications among young people.

According to a press release, the Sheriff's Office is seeing an uptick in altered IDs obtained online, often from foreign websites, with youngsters paying between $70 to a few hundred dollars.

While some believe it's a misdemeanor, Missouri statute reveals presenting altered documents could lead to a class D felony.

Beyond legal consequences, the Sheriff Steve Cox highlights the risks of dealing with professional criminals, urging parents to educate their children on the potential dangers of using fake IDs.

The Sheriff's Office emphasizes the importance of keeping personal information private to prevent identity theft. Authorities have already seized fake IDs locally and stress the growing threat of this issue.
