JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - In the Missouri Department of Conservation's latest report, hunters demonstrated a strong start to the new firearms early antlerless portion of deer season.
Hunters killed over 16,500 deer from Oct. 6-8. Franklin County led the pack with 489 deer, followed by Howell with 454 and Ripley with 437.
The initiative aims to stabilize the deer population, with additional antlerless harvest required, especially as deer numbers continue to rise. The new portion was strategically timed for favorable weather conditions.
It provided an opportunity for hunters to focus on antlerless deer before the November firearms season, traditionally centered on buck hunting. Archery hunting continues until Jan. 15 of next year, with various firearms portions scheduled.
For detailed information, hunters can refer to MDC’s 2023 Fall Deer & Turkey Regulations and Information booklet, available online and where permits are sold.
