JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - As fall settles in, Missouri motorists are urged to brace for an increase in wildlife activity on roadways, especially deer.
The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDot) is advising vigilance due to the elevated risk of collisions during the darker fall months.
Missouri now ranks 10th in the nation for potential animal collisions, up from 14th last year. MoDOT adds that the odds of hitting wildlife while driving are one in 80.
In 2022 alone, the state saw nearly 3,700 crashes involving deer, resulting in five fatalities and 424 injuries. MoDOT emphasizes avoiding swerving to prevent loss of vehicle control.
If you hit a deer or notice anything in the road, call MO-DOT at 1-888-275-6636. Crews will address any deer, animal or debris on a highway that is a safety hazard
