COLUMBUS, Neb. - The Nebraska Public Power District is reminding farmers and others to look up and look out for power lines.
The NPPD asks large equipment operators to keep equipment at least 20 feet away from powerlines at all times.
Officials with the energy company said in a press release that if a piece of equipment gets too close to a line, electricity can arc to the equipment and result in potentially serious or fatal injury.
If an equipment operator comes in contact with a powerline, they are advised to remain seated in the vehicle until help arrives to deenergize the line.
A power line touching a vehicle or even the ground, can electrify both the vehicle and the ground in the surrounding area. If you are forced to leave the vehicle due to a fire, jump away from the vehicle, land on two feet, and shuffle as far away as you can.
The NPPD also reminds farmers who use drones to be cautious of power lines as well, to protect both their technology as well as nearby fields.
