U.S. drought map shows slight improvements

LINCOLN, Neb. - Widespread rainfall across Iowa is alleviating some of the worst drought in conditions in the Hawkeye State.

That's according to the U.S. Drought Monitor, which says more than two of rain fell in parts of Iowa to help with drought conditions seen throughout the year.

The map shows that about 96 percent of the state is still suffering from some measure of drought and that this current drought is the driest in a decade.

When looking at the map, the northeast portion of the state is under extreme drought conditions with a few counties under exceptional drought conditions. This has been the hardest hit part of the state when it comes to the drought.

According to the Climate Prediction Center, the drought is project to remain in most of the state throughout the rest of the year, but gradually become less severe.

That's because forecasts are predicting wetter conditions and El Nino should arrive as we enter the winter months.
