DES MOINES, Iowa - Iowa is grappling with the third-worst outbreak of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease, ranking behind only 2012 and 2019 in severity.
Southeastern Iowa has borne the brunt, with reports emerging from 74 counties, marking the highest number for a single year.
The most affected counties exceed deer population management goals, historically rebounding within two to three years.
The outbreak, unique for its late occurrence, persists due to prolonged warm weather favoring midge spread. The public is urged to contact the DNR if they suspect EHD on their property to enhance monitoring efforts.
