MDC offers safety tips for non-hunters

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - With several hunting seasons under way here in Missouri, the Missouri Department of Conservation is asking non-hunters to remember to stay safe when out in areas where hunters may be present.

The MDC says you should wear bright clothing and avoid earth tones like tan and brown. Wear orange safety vests, and put hi-visibility bandanas on any dogs that may accompany you on trails.

Be especially aware during the hours of dawn or dusk when hunters and animals are most active.

If you hear shooting, make yourself known by raising your voice and making sure the hunter knows where you are, otherwise be courteous of others and try not to disturb wildlife.

Another important reminder is to stay on the designated trails, which are designed with the safety of people and animals in mind. Also, be aware of when hunting seasons begin and end, as well as what land allows hunting on it.
