JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - During Missouri's fall firearms turkey season, hunters killed a total of 2,219 turkeys.

That's according to preliminary data from the Missouri Department of Conservation on the season which lasted from October 1-31.

Dent County led the harvest with 86 birds, followed by Crawford with 82 and Washington with 72. The figures represent an increase from last year's fall firearms turkey season, which saw 1,844 birds harvested.

MDC turkey officials attribute the rise to increased harvest during the spring season and higher poultry production.

Fall archery turkey hunting continues, and the MDC encourages hunters to contribute to research by saving and sending feathers from harvested turkeys.
