Sheriff's Office investigating death of inmate

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Buchanan County Sheriff's Department says it's investigating the death of a 68-year-old jail inmate.

Edward D. Carrico passed away approximately an hour after being discovered attempting self-harm by prison staff.

The incident unfolded at around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, prompting immediate intervention by deputies and medical personnel.

Despite extensive lifesaving efforts during Carrico's transport to the hospital, they were regrettably unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at approximately 8:25 a.m.

Carrico had been facing second degree sodomy charges. As part of the investigative process, an autopsy has been ordered.
