Iowa DNR talks muzzleloader season for deer hunting

DES MOINES, Iowa - As Iowa's deer hunting season progresses, the focus now shifts to the late muzzleloader season and the reopening of the archery season.

Iowa Department of Natural Resources officials anticipate 15,000-to-20,000 hunters in the late muzzleloader season, aiming to hunt about 10,000 deer.

This quieter season allows for herd management and meat procurement. The late muzzleloader and archery seasons run from now until January 10.

Subsequent antlerless deer seasons, Population Management and Excess Tag January Antlerless, occur from January 11-21, differing in eligible counties and permitted methods of take.

So far, hunters have reported over 90,000 deer hunted, and chronic wasting disease monitoring continues with increased sampling.
