DES MOINES, Iowa - Iowa's second gun deer season is drawing over 50,000 hunters and unfortunately, it's been marked three hunting incidents.
Two instances involved shooting at running deer between hunters, resulting in injuries. The third incident involved self-inflicted harm due to careless firearm handling.
All incidents were preventable, according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Experts stressed the need to avoid shooting at running deer and encouraged hunters to develop and follow a comprehensive hunting plan, including safety basics.
Despite these incidents, the majority of the 2023 deer hunts, with nearly 77,000 deer reported, have occurred without issues.
Officials urged hunters to prioritize safety and emphasized that ensuring everyone's well-being is paramount.
