MARYVILLE, Mo. - All humans and four-legged creatures are safe after an early morning fire in Maryville.
Around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, a person alerted the New Nodaway Humane Society that they could see smoke coming from their building.
Shelter Manager Wendy Combs says they quickly evacuated the dogs, since the fire was in the dog area, and then quickly evacuated the cats.
Combs says once word spread about the fire around Maryville, the community showed up to help.

Combs said there's no official word yet on what started the fire.

She adds that they've already contacted their insurance company and a contractor so that the building can be secured so that their animals can get back in the building.
