ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - In the St. Joseph Public School District, officials are dissecting the state-issued report card, aiming to enhance scores given by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
The score received was 63.2%. Officials acknowledge that attendance remains a significant challenge, with the district falling just short of the 80% state standard despite an increase from 71% to 79%.
Teacher recruitment and retention pose additional hurdles for the district, as well as nearly every Missouri public school district.
The state struggles with a teacher shortage, losing 5,000 teachers annually, while only 3,500 graduate with education degrees.
Academically, there are concerns about math and Language Arts, prompting a call for innovative solutions and personalized educational plans for each student.
Edgar emphasizes the need for state lawmakers to address Missouri's low teacher pay, suggesting a reevaluation of the funding formula established in 2006.
