Dec. 20, 2023LAWSON, Mo.
Before the Maryville High School girls basketball team heads into the holiday break, they have one more classic on the schedule that goes deeper than the hardwood.
Lawson High School is hosting its first Hoops for Hope on Thursday. The shootout will feature five girls basketball games featuring 10 teams, all coached by women, bringing awareness to breast cancer, and fundraising for the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation.
Maryville's matchup with host school Lawson brings additional meaning to the cause – Cardinals' head coach Lisa Glenn is a breast cancer survivor. Spoofhound head coach Kelly Obley sees this as a special opportunity for her team to spend time with and learn from survivors like Glenn.
"Basketball is one of our favorite things, but a lot of times it is bigger than basketball," Spoofhound head coach Kelly Obley said. "(Thursday) night is going to be that, because we get to honor those cancer survivors, see women in leadership roles, and then, at the end of the day, go out and play the sport we love."
The Hoops for Hope shootout begins at 1pm Thursday. Maryville and Lawson meet in the fourth game of the day at 5:30pm.
