MIAA football will see a shakeup in 2024 and beyond.
The league approved Northeastern State's request to play football as an independent school beginning next year. The Riverhawks pursued independent status feeling it will give them a greater chance to compete and be successful in football. NSU fired head coach J.J. Eckert on November 13, two days after finishing a 1-10 campaign. The Riverhawks haven't posted a winning record since 2000 when they went 9-2 and won the Lone Star Conference.
The 2024 MIAA football schedule was released last spring, and NSU will honor that schedule as a non-conference opponent. However, the remaining MIAA schools can replace that matchup with another non-conference opponent if they choose to.
The Riverhawks will retain membership in the league in their other nine NCAA Division II varsity sports.
