Championship basketball will be on display in our region next week.

The Civic Arena in St. Joseph will play host to the Division 2 Women's Basketball Elite Eight starting Monday.

The field of eight teams features Seven No. 1 seeds from their respective regions, five squads with at least 30 wins, the No. 1 team in the WBCA Top 25 Coaches Poll, and the defending champs in Glenville State.

Brett Esely, the director of the St. Joseph Sports Commission, believes the high-level basketball combined with the renovated venue should make for a great tournament.

"The Civic Arena is just a really good venue for small college athletics and high school events," Esely said. "It's the right size. It holds the acoustics well, and it really is one of those venues that you don't have to have that big of a crowd to have a good environment. You know the basketball is going to be elite and I think the atmosphere will be as well."

The Civic Arena has seen some big changes in recent months – an updated floor, 80% of the seats have been replaced, the hoops are new, a Daktronics centerhung LED scoreboard, and all new LED lighting in the building.

The opening game of the tournament is Monday, March 20 at noon between California State Dominguez Hills and Catawba (NC).
